Lumbar Stenosis

, improve your function, and enhance your quality of life. We create personalized treatment plans that focus on your unique needs, ensuring an effective approach to your care

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back. This narrowing can compress the nerves that pass through the spinal canal, leading to pain, discomfort, and potential neurological symptoms.

Causes of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis can develop due to various factors, including:

  1. Degenerative changes: Age-related wear and tear on the spine, such as disc degeneration and facet joint arthritis, can contribute to spinal canal narrowing.
  2. Bone spurs: Abnormal bone growths can develop on the vertebrae, encroaching on the spinal canal and compressing nerves.
  3. Herniated discs: The soft, cushion-like discs between the vertebrae can bulge or rupture, putting pressure on the nerves in the spinal canal.
  4. Congenital factors: Some individuals may be born with a narrow spinal canal, predisposing them to spinal stenosis.

Symptoms of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the degree of nerve compression. Common symptoms include:

  1. Lower back pain that may radiate into the buttocks and legs.
  2. Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs or feet.
  3. Leg cramps or pain when walking or standing for extended periods.
  4. Difficulty walking or maintaining balance.
  5. Loss of bladder or bowel control in severe cases.

Treatment for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Treatment options for lumbar spinal stenosis may include:

  1. Pain management: Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications to manage pain and inflammation.
  2. Physical therapy: A personalized exercise program to strengthen the muscles that support the spine, improve flexibility, and promote proper posture and body mechanics.
  3. Activity modification: Avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms and incorporating low-impact exercises to maintain fitness.
  4. Epidural steroid injections: Injections of corticosteroid medications into the epidural space of the spine to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
  5. Surgery: In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to decompress the spinal canal and relieve nerve compression.

Treatment Approaches
we offer:

Ultrasound - Ultrasound warms deep structures, improves blood flow and flexibility and allows for better stretching.
TENS-TENS Unit - Unit is a low voltage electric current that stimulates nerves and produces a massaging or tingling sensation to decrease pain. Electrodes are placed directly on the skin on a painful point.
Superficial heat - A hot compress warms superficial structures, decreases muscle spasm and increases blood flow.Ice- Cold pack decreases redness and swelling and slows down metabolism during acute pain and inflammation.
Cupping - Cupping is used in physical therapy to increase blood circulation to a particular area, which can help to promote muscle healing, reduce pain, and increase range of motion.
Low Level Laser Therapy - Laser therapy increases blood flow, speeds up tissue repair and healing, decreases swelling and inflammation and enhances immune responses.
Joint Mobilization and Joint Traction - Joint mobilization and traction help to decrease pain by increasing mobility of a joint and decreasing swelling and inflammation.
Stretching - Regular stretching improves elasticity, increases blood flow, maintains healthy structure of joints and muscles and helps to prevent or slow down arthritic changes.
Exercise - Regular exercises increase muscle strength and joint stability, boost bone health and help maintain healthy weight.
Massage with Hot Stones - Massage with Hot Stones relaxes painful muscles and breaks down "knots"and restrictions. It has an overall soothing effect on the body, increases mood and improves wellbeing.
Bracing - A brace gives extra support to muscles and joints, especially after injury or surgery and when performing strenuous daily activities.
Patient Education - Patient is instructed on proper use of heat or ice, home exercises, proper sleeping and sitting positions and proper lifting techniques.

Excellent office, above and beyond service! All people work as a TEAM. Karina is a jewel to this place: friendly, nice and supportive. All people make you feel in a Spa, not in a doctor's office in it's usual sense (where you want to leave asap). Eros is a very knowledgeable and helpful (for any questions you get answers in a professional manner - he knows what he is doing and does an excellent job ). Grateful to Dr.Inna Kouperman MS,PT,who managed to organize her office in such a manner. The name Excel Physical Therapy says it all! Everybody knows that the Front desk is the Face of the office. So, I have to mention Tamara, who is always reminding me about appointment by phone and also greets with the smile and friendly face. I would greatly recommend this place to all people and would give more than 5 stars!!! Love you all!

I have been coming for 1 month. When I 1st came I could not even walk a block without having to stop because my legs, back & feet were killing me. I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet going to my calves as well. I have been having tens unit & hot stone therapy on my feet & calves and it is FANTASTIC. I have also been doing the bicycle (started at 5 minutes and now I can do 15 minutes) and balance & stretching for my calves & thighs. Inna is a MIRACLE WORKER. Last week after I left her office, i went walking from Brighton 3rd St. to 1 block short of Coney Island Ave. Then I turned down the block to Brighton Beach Ave. I walked all the way down to Brighton 1st St. without any PAIN or TROUBLE WITH MY FEET. Inna Kouperman Of EXCEL PHYSICAL THERAPY is the ABSOLUTE BEST and I RECOMMEND HER HIGHLY.. I can't wait to see what the next months progress brings !!!!!

Inna is just a know it all physical therapist, from my knee to my shoulder injury, she was able to help me heal my injuries. She takes her time and every time there is a different type of excercise or massage applied to the injured area. Can't say enough good things about her staff especially coming from different places like One n One where they do dverything repeatedly and nothing gets done.
